Elementary school full of light
2013, 2021(revised)
Competition
Competition work for a sustainable elementary school located in Tokyo, Japan.
Collaborated with Sayako Urayama.
What we aimed to create was a space that utilized the limited resources
and made children feel relaxed and free.
The biggest problem was that a separated gymnasium would take too much space
from the site to also have enough room for a playground.
Our proposal was to make an atrium that works as a gymnasium
in the middle of the school building and two atriums more used as a media centre and a multi-purpose hall.
These atriums invite sunlight into the building that indirectly reaches the classrooms
through corridors along the voids.
They also work as chimneys that help with natural ventilation.
The school has an open plan and is flexible so that students can move as they like.
The rooftop is a grass roof. A pool and a kitchen garden lies there
and students can learn and play there, not only on the playground.
